Neil Mark D'Souza, MD (b. 1992) is a resident physician and award-winning artist currently living and working in San Antonio, Texas. He is a 2013 graduate of Rice University and 2017 graduate from Baylor College of Medicine. He is presently training as a radiation oncologist at Mays Cancer Center. On a daily basis, he uses his artistic ability to meticulously design, with a touch pen, palliative and curative radiation therapy for cancer patients. Outside of patient care, he is self-taught in realism, primarily through oils, graphite and charcoal. Through art, he aims to transcend the limitations of ordinary materialism and reductionism, in order to interface with the multidimensional nature of reality as uniquely experienced by humanity.
Ataraxia is a state of consciousness characterized by mental tranquility, a
condition which seems to be more and more scarce in modernity. It is an
important concept and life goal to be attained in several Hellenistic schools of
philosophy, including the Stoics, Epicureans and Skeptics (which were in turn
influenced by Eastern philosophies). This painting evokes a sensual and very
literal sense of ataraxia, while celebrating the beauty of the human body and
female form in repose.
