When creating this piece, my intention was to mimic the stylistic appearance of a relief print. By starting with a digital canvas I removed from the black to reveal a poppy field and clouds. The image itself is an actual location in California, inspired by the sublime felt when standing in the phenomenon amongst the blazing hills.
Maria Cendejas was born in Michoacán, Mexico in 1999. Her family immigrated to the United States when she was a child. Growing up in Northern California, she was introduced to intaglio printmaking by Stephen Thomas. She later received an internship with Paulson Fontaine Press (an intaglio printmaking studio located in Berkeley, California), along with a study abroad program with Cow House Studios (located in Wexford, Ireland). She is currently under the mentorship of Harvey Mireles, the founder of La Printeriá. The studio teaches silkscreen printmaking, which has given Maria the opportunity to expand her printmaking knowledge and use of the medium. The themes presented in Maria’s artwork is nostalgia and location.
