It Was an Orange Day Like No Other

SUSAN HARMON AUSTIN, UNITED STATES I am an artist/Professor of Art At entral Texas first art award My name is Susan Harmon. I was born and lived much of my life in Chicago. I hold a BFA, Painting, from The School of The Art Institute of Chicago and another BFA, Graphic design, from The University of Illinois. I received my MFA degree from Georgia Southern University and I spent one year working on a PHD in Studio Art at Monash University, Melbourne, Australia. I received a generous fellowship to pursue my PhD art research at The Julia and David White art residency in Costa Rica. I am an Abstract Expressionist painter. My work is large, typically 12’x5’. I work on un-stretched and un prepared canvas, on the floor or wall. My works are informed by books; stories about women who have suffered trauma and their road to recover. Recently I was awarded a commission to complete 5 murals for the city of San Marcos, 60’ long and 20’ tall. The University of Central Oklahoma chose 5 of my art works to use for their costumes for the play, Trojan Women 2, April 2019. I was invited to create a poster for ACT/ART Brooklyn, NYC; my art will go to the White House as a finalist. I have exhibited my work both nationally and internationally. I teach art studio courses at Central Texas College, Fort Hood and Marble Falls campuses. I am married for 37 years and have 4 boys and one Siberian husky. We are relatively new to the Austin, Texas area, relocated 7 years ago.
